How many nights for Kruger and the Panorama Route?

Our answer is three or four

If you only have two nights, come anyway.

But if you have the choice, we would stay three nights at a minimum, and four if you want the trip to feel like a holiday rather than an itinerary.

The reason is simple. Hazyview sits between Kruger and the Panorama Route. Both deserve a day. And The Zarafa deserves a little time too.

Two nights

Two nights works if time is tight, and suits a weekend for two well. Arrive in the afternoon. Settle into your villa. Have dinner.

Use the next day for either Kruger or the Panorama Route. Then have breakfast and leave the following morning.

If you have already spent several days on safari elsewhere, we would choose the Panorama Route. If this is your only opportunity to see Kruger, go to Kruger.

It is a good short stay. The thing you will not have much of is time at the lodge.

Three nights

Three nights is where it starts to work properly, and we have set out how we would spend them. You can have a day in Kruger and a day on the Panorama Route without changing hotels or repacking your suitcase between the two.

There is also a little space around the edges. Maybe you return from a half-day safari and spend the afternoon at the pool. Maybe you have a slow breakfast before heading towards the escarpment. Maybe dinner is the only plan for the evening.

Those gaps matter. Every villa at The Zarafa has its own private pool and outdoor space. There is not much point booking the privacy if you are going to leave before sunrise every morning and come back only to sleep.

Four nights

Four nights is our favourite for most couples. Kruger gets a day. The Panorama Route gets a day. And then there is another day where you can decide what you actually feel like doing.

Book another safari. Go to Elephant Whispers. Have a massage. Do something adventurous.

Or do not. Sleep late. Stay at the pool. Have lunch. Spend the afternoon doing nothing useful. It is surprisingly easy to forget that this is allowed on holiday.

Four nights is particularly nice if you have already spent the previous week moving between safari camps, hotels and airports. At some point, unpacking properly becomes a luxury in itself.

Five nights or more

At five nights, Hazyview stops feeling like a stop between other destinations and becomes a proper base.

You can visit Kruger more than once. You can see the Panorama Route without worrying that cloud on the escarpment has ruined your only chance. You can add other activities without filling every hour. And you can enjoy The Zarafa without feeling that you ought to be somewhere else.

For international visitors on a longer South African trip, that can work very well.

The mistake we would avoid

Do not count only the activities.

It is very easy to create an itinerary that looks fantastic from home: Kruger, Panorama Route, elephants, Blyde, spa, rafting, safari, private dining.

Then you arrive and discover that the entire holiday consists of looking at the clock because somebody is collecting you in twenty minutes.

Leave some space. The villa is part of the trip. The pool is part of the trip. Dinner is part of the trip. An afternoon when nobody is coming to collect you is part of the trip.

So how long?

Two nights if that is all you have. Three nights for Kruger and the Panorama Route. Four nights if you want to experience both and still properly enjoy The Zarafa. Five or more if you want Hazyview to be a relaxed base for the wider Lowveld.

For a honeymoon, anniversary or simply a holiday where the hotel matters as much as the sightseeing, we would take the extra night.

We have never heard anyone complain that they had one afternoon too many beside their own pool.
