KMIA or Skukuza? Choosing the best airport for Hazyview

If you are flying rather than driving to the Lowveld, two airport names tend to appear when you start planning: Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA) and Skukuza Airport.

Both can work for a stay in Hazyview. They simply suit slightly different journeys.

KMIA: usually the simplest choice for Hazyview

Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport sits outside Mbombela and is the main commercial airport serving this part of Mpumalanga.

It generally offers a broader choice of scheduled connections than Skukuza.

For most guests whose principal destination is Hazyview rather than an overnight lodge inside Kruger, KMIA is the airport we would look at first.

You land outside the national park, meet your transfer or collect a rental car, and travel directly to Hazyview.

It is also convenient if your Lowveld stay includes the Panorama Route as well as Kruger.

Skukuza: the beautiful way to arrive

Skukuza Airport is different.

It is actually inside Kruger National Park, close to Skukuza Rest Camp. Scheduled services connect it with major South African hubs.

If you are combining The Zarafa with accommodation inside Kruger or a private reserve, Skukuza can make excellent sense.

It also offers an arrival that feels distinctly like the beginning of a safari. The airport is small, surrounded by bush and deliberately designed to sit quietly within its surroundings.

Which one is closer?

This is where looking at a map can be misleading.

Skukuza is geographically close to Hazyview, but it is inside the national park. Travelling between it and Hazyview means using park roads, observing park speed limits and leaving through a gate.

KMIA is outside Kruger and connects to Hazyview by ordinary roads.

The question therefore isn’t simply which airport appears closer in a straight line.

Choose the flight first

For most travellers, the best airport is ultimately the one that gives you the best overall journey.

A good direct flight at a sensible hour is usually worth more than saving a small amount of road time.

We would consider, in this order: your international or domestic connection, arrival time, luggage requirements, transfer arrangements and what you are doing before or after The Zarafa.

If one option creates a comfortable direct journey and the other involves a long connection, the decision is usually made for you.

What about Hoedspruit?

Hoedspruit Airport is another Lowveld option and works particularly well for properties around the central western side of Kruger and the private reserves in that area.

For a stay focused on Hazyview, however, KMIA or Skukuza will ordinarily make more geographical sense.

Do you need to hire a car?

Not necessarily.

If your plan is to stay at The Zarafa and let us arrange your safari, Panorama Route tour and other excursions, a private airport transfer can be simpler than hiring a car that spends most of the holiday parked.

If you want complete independence or intend to self-drive in Kruger and explore the region on your own, a rental car becomes much more useful.
