Frequently asked
Questions guests ask before they book
The lodge
What is The Zarafa?
A five-star nature lodge in Hazyview with one- and two-bedroom private pool villas, Thai-Balinese décor, a daily-changing kitchen and in-villa wellness treatments, set above the Sabie River Valley, close to Kruger.
What makes it different from other lodges near Kruger?
Scale. Large safari resorts do volume; we do five villas. Each has its own pool and its own gate, the kitchen cooks only for guests staying with us, and the service is personal because there are not many of you.
Is The Zarafa family-friendly?
We welcome guests over the age of 18. The retreat is designed to be tranquil and romantic, so we keep it adults only.
Villas
Does every villa have a private pool?
Yes. All villas have their own rim-flow pool with views over the Sabie Valley.
What is included in the villa?
Air conditioning and a ceiling fan, an extra-length king bed, a stocked minibar, a Nespresso machine, complimentary Wi-Fi, luxury toiletries, a laptop safe, satellite TV, a fireplace, and a private deck with loungers.
Are villas serviced daily?
Yes. Daily, and around your privacy rather than through it.
Dining
What meals are included?
Dinner and breakfast, taken either in the restaurant or in your villa.
What happens to breakfast if I go on an early game drive?
Nothing is lost. Breakfast is still included, and you have it at a restaurant inside the Kruger National Park partway through the drive, which most guests end up preferring to having it at the lodge.
What is dinner like?
Five courses on a menu that changes daily, each evening inspired by a different country. Breakfast is gourmet, and cocktails can be served in your villa or on the deck.
Can I request a romantic private dinner?
Yes. It is set up in a private area of our garden, under fairy lights, candles and flickering lanterns, with a personalised menu. Pre-booking is essential.
Do you cater to dietary requirements?
We are very happy to accommodate any allergies or dietary requirements, including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and halal. Tell us when you book so the kitchen can tailor the menu to your requirements.
Wellness
Do you offer spa treatments?
Yes. Massages, facials and relaxation therapies, all done in your villa. Book in advance or on arrival.
Can I book a couples' massage?
Yes, as a package, in the privacy of your villa.
Safaris & excursions
How far is Kruger?
Phabeni Gate is 17 km away, about a twenty-minute drive.
Do you arrange safaris and Panorama Route tours?
Yes. We work with trusted local partners for tailored game drives and Panorama Route day trips, and we handle the arrangements.
Can you organise transport to attractions?
Yes. Private transfers and guided tours to Blyde River Canyon, God's Window and Pilgrim's Rest, plus airport transport.
What is the best time of year to visit?
May to October, the dry season, is best for game viewing. November to April is lush and green, and better for birdwatching and photography.
Booking & logistics
Do you provide airport transfers?
Yes. From Kruger Mpumalanga International (KMIA), Skukuza, Hoedspruit, or OR Tambo International in Johannesburg. Fees vary by airport.
What are check-in and check-out times?
Check in from 2pm, check out by 11am. Early check-in and late check-out can usually be arranged, subject to availability.
What is your cancellation policy?
It depends on the season and the package booked. Full details are on your booking confirmation, or ask reservations before you book.
Is there Wi-Fi?
Complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi throughout the villas and common areas.
Is there shopping or dining nearby?
Hazyview has local shops, markets and a range of South African restaurants, though dinner here is included, so most guests eat in.
