Lowveld guide
A Romantic Weekend in Hazyview: Kruger, Dinner and Time for Two
Start by not planning too much
A romantic weekend can go wrong surprisingly quickly once somebody produces an itinerary.
Breakfast at 7.
Collected at 8.
Activity at 10.
Lunch at 12.
Massage at 2.
Sunset at 5.
Dinner at 7.
At some point it begins to feel less like a weekend away and more like a school excursion.
We would keep it simpler.
Come somewhere beautiful.
Choose one or two things you genuinely want to do.
Leave the rest alone.
Night one: arrive properly
If you can, arrive during the afternoon.
Do not book anything.
Let us show you the villa.
Put the bags down.
Open the doors.
Have a look at the pool.
Then get into it.
There is no urgent need to see Hazyview before dinner.
You have just arrived.
Stay where you are for a while.
Later, get dressed, have a drink and come to dinner.
Five courses means you probably do not need another plan for the evening.
The next morning: choose Kruger or sleep
There are two perfectly good answers.
If this is your first trip to the Lowveld, go to Kruger.
Phabeni Gate is 17 km from The Zarafa, so you can be in the park very quickly.
A private morning safari works particularly well for a short romantic stay.
You get the early part of the day in Kruger and still have the afternoon back at the lodge.
The other option is to ignore all of that.
Sleep.
Have breakfast late.
Spend the morning at the villa.
If you have already spent several days on safari elsewhere, this may actually be the better choice.
Come back to the pool
This is where we think The Zarafa works particularly well for couples.
The pool is not shared.
It belongs to your villa.
There is no need to find an empty lounger or wonder whether somebody else\’s children are about to jump in beside you.
There are no children, for that matter.
We are adults only.
Take a book.
Order something to drink.
Talk.
Do not talk.
An afternoon does not have to produce a photograph to have been worthwhile.
Add a massage
A massage fits a romantic weekend very well because it does not take over the entire day.
Have breakfast.
Do very little.
Have the treatment.
Then continue doing very little afterwards.
We can arrange treatments during the stay, and for couples it is an easy way to make the day feel special without turning it into another excursion.
Dinner for two
If the weekend is for an anniversary, birthday, proposal, honeymoon or simply because you have not had enough time together lately, private dining is worth considering.
The evening is yours.
A five-course dinner is served privately, away from the main restaurant.
There is no last seating after yours and nowhere else you need to be.
If you are planning to propose, tell us.
It is useful information.
We would rather know than arrive enthusiastically with the next course at exactly the wrong moment.
Do you need an occasion?
Not at all.
A surprising amount of romance is ruined by waiting for an anniversary.
You are allowed to arrange dinner for two because you felt like it.
Tuesday is sufficient reason.
What about the Panorama Route?
If you have three nights, yes.
The Panorama Route makes a lovely day out together.
It is completely different from Kruger and gives you mountains, waterfalls and Blyde River Canyon rather than wildlife.
Go privately if you want to make the day easy.
Then you can stop where you want, skip what does not interest you and have lunch without checking when the group is leaving.
If you only have two nights, we would probably choose between Kruger and the Panorama Route rather than trying to do both.
There is no benefit in returning from a romantic weekend exhausted.
Two nights or three?
Two nights works.
You arrive, have one full day and leave after breakfast.
Three is better.
The extra night changes the pace more than you might expect.
You stop worrying that every unused hour is being wasted.
There is time for one outing and one slow day.
Or two outings if that is what you want.
Either way, you do not spend the whole weekend checking out almost as soon as you checked in.
If it is a birthday or anniversary
Tell us.
Not because we are going to attack the villa with balloons unless you ask us to.
Because knowing why you are here helps.
Perhaps you want private dining.
Perhaps flowers.
Perhaps a cake.
Perhaps you are planning something that needs to happen at a particular time without the other person knowing.
Those are the things worth telling us before you arrive.
If it is a proposal
Definitely tell us.
We can help with the practical bits and, more importantly, make sure we do not interrupt.
The proposal should be the surprise.
Not the waiter.
What makes a place romantic?
Probably not rose petals.
At least not by themselves.
For us, it is privacy.
Space.
Nobody rushing you through dinner.
A pool you do not share.
A room where you can close the door and disappear for the afternoon.
People looking after you without constantly appearing beside you.
And enough time for the person you came with.
That is what we have tried to create here.
Our version of a romantic weekend
Arrive Friday.
Swim.
Dinner.
Saturday morning in Kruger if you feel like it.
Pool in the afternoon.
Private dinner that evening.
Slow breakfast on Sunday.
Leave later than you originally planned.
That is enough.
If you have a third night, add the Panorama Route or keep another day free.
There is no prize for squeezing more into it.
Our answer
The best romantic weekends tend to contain rather less than people expect.
One beautiful place.
One or two memorable experiences.
Good food.
Privacy.
And enough time that neither of you is asking what happens next.
That is probably the part we would protect most.
