Sunrise over the Blyde River Canyon on the Panorama Route

Beyond the park

Sightseeing

An hour west of the lodge the escarpment climbs out of the Lowveld into the Drakensberg, and the landscape changes completely: canyons, waterfalls, forest and viewpoints instead of bushveld. Closer to home there are caves, rescued chimpanzees, elephants and the adventure country Hazyview is known for. Rates are available on request.

Panorama Route

One of the great drives in South Africa

The road along the top of the escarpment strings together waterfalls, viewpoints and the Blyde River Canyon, the largest green canyon in the world and the third largest canyon of any kind.

The day takes in the Graskop Gorge Lift and forest walk, Lisbon Falls, God’s Window, Pinnacle Rock, Berlin Falls, the Blyde River Canyon nature reserve, the Three Rondavels and Bourke’s Luck Potholes. Because the tour is private, you are welcome to reshape the itinerary with your guide.

Blyde River Canyon

Dam cruise & Moholoholo

A boat trip on the Blyde Dam, looking up at the canyon walls and the Three Rondavels from the water, paired with the Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, a working sanctuary for injured and orphaned animals, many of them raptors, that cannot be returned to the wild.

Underground & primates

Sudwala Caves & Chimp Eden

A guided walk 150 metres underground and 600 metres into the oldest caves in the world, cut into dolomite laid down long before anything walked on land. If caves are not for you, the Lowveld Botanical Gardens make an easy substitute. The day then goes on to Chimp Eden outside Mbombela, where rescued chimpanzees, most of them out of the bushmeat and pet trades, live in large forested enclosures.

Elephant Whispers

A close encounter with elephants

An introduction to five rescued elephants, close enough to touch them and feel the difference between the skin of an ear and the skin of a trunk. Their handlers talk through the animals’ history, their intelligence and the conservation work behind them, and there is a chance to feed them. It is well run, genuinely respectful, and takes a morning rather than a whole day.
