Where to stay near Kruger National Park: why Hazyview makes such a good base

Do you need to stay inside Kruger?

No.

There are good reasons to stay inside the park, but it is not the only way to have a proper Kruger holiday.

From The Zarafa, Phabeni Gate is 17 km away. You can leave early, spend as long as you like in the park and come back to Hazyview afterwards.

For us, that is a very good arrangement. You get the safari when you want it, but you do not have to make every part of the holiday about safari.

What do you give up?

The obvious thing is that you are not sleeping inside the park. If waking up in Kruger is something you have always wanted to do, then do it. There is a special atmosphere to being inside the park after the day visitors have left.

But if what matters most to you is the quality of where you stay, privacy, food and service, the picture changes.

What do you get instead?

At The Zarafa, every villa has its own private pool. There are only five villas. Breakfast and a five-course dinner are included.

You have much more space than you would in most park accommodation, and the lodge itself is somewhere you may actually want to spend part of the day.

That matters more than people think. After six or eight hours in a safari vehicle, a private pool starts looking extremely sensible.

What about private safari lodges?

That is a different comparison. Many private safari lodges are excellent. They can also be very expensive, because you are paying for accommodation, meals, guides, game drives and the private reserve itself as one package.

That makes sense if you want the full private-reserve experience. But you do not have to buy all of that every night simply because you want a luxury Kruger holiday.

At The Zarafa, you stay well first. Then you add the safari experiences you actually want. For many guests, that works out at a much lower overall price without feeling like they have chosen the cheaper option.

The value is not about cutting corners

We do not think of The Zarafa as a budget alternative to a safari lodge. We would not have much interest in that.

The point is that you can have a beautiful villa, your own pool, very personal service and good food without paying the premium that comes with sleeping inside a private reserve. You are paying for what you actually use.

Hazyview also gives you more choice

Kruger is in one direction. The Panorama Route is in the other. That means you can spend one day on safari and the next among mountains, waterfalls and the canyon. Or you can stay at the lodge.

That flexibility is one of the things our guests tend to enjoy most.

Service is easier when there are only five villas

There is a limit to how personal service can be when a hotel is looking after a very large number of people. We have five villas, which makes things simpler.

We get to know what guests drink, what they do not eat, whether they want recommendations, and whether they would rather be left alone for the afternoon.

It is not complicated hospitality. It is just easier to look after people properly when there are fewer of them.

Should anyone still stay inside Kruger?

Of course. If Kruger is the whole reason for the trip and you plan to spend almost every daylight hour in the park, staying inside makes sense.

You can also combine the two. A few nights inside the park or at a private reserve, followed by a few nights at The Zarafa, works extremely well. You get the safari immersion first, then the pool, food, privacy and a slower pace afterwards.

What would we choose?

For a holiday that is entirely about wildlife, we would stay inside. For a luxury Lowveld holiday that includes Kruger, we would stay in Hazyview.

That is really the difference.
